The candidates are required to apply separately through JoSAA for admission to IITs (including IIT Madras & IIT Indore) for other modes of admission. This portal deals with admissions for seats earmarked under sports quota in IIT Madras & IIT Indore only.

The candidates who are eligible for admission through SEA, would then be given a score in terms of their performance/achievement in the sporting activities (see Table 1 below).

The candidate’s SEA Scores will be treated the same for “Individual” or “Team Events.” Tournaments (International and National) in sports disciplines recognized by the 58 federations recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India, ONLY will be considered for the award of points. The specific international and national events/competitions that will be considered for SEA Score calculation for admission through SEA are listed in Appendix–A and Appendix–B along with their relative weightages.

A separate Sports Rank List (SRL) will be prepared based on the total SEA Score (which must be greater than 0; a zero SEA Score does not qualify the candidate to figure in the SRL) obtained by the candidates based on their performance in the specific list of sports mentioned in Appendix–A only. The seat allotment will be done based on SRL only. Mere presence in the SRL does not guarantee admission. If there are candidates with the same SEA Score, the following ordered tiebreaking criterion will be adopted to allot a rank.

• Candidates with higher scores at the international level will be given higher rank.
• In case of a tie at both international and national levels, a candidate with a better JEE (Advanced) 2026 total marks will be given a higher rank.
• In case of a tie at the total marks of JEE (Advanced) 2026, a candidate with higher marks in Mathematics in JEE (Advanced) 2026 will be given a higher rank.
• In case of a tie at the Mathematics marks of JEE (Advanced) 2026, a candidate with higher marks in Physics in JEE (Advanced) 2026 will be given a higher rank.
• In case of a tie at all the above scenarios, the same rank will be given to all the candidates with a tie.

By this method, the candidate will be placed according to the performance in the sporting activities and thereby achieve the objective of encouraging excellence in sports. The admission process through SEA would not be through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal, but on a separate portal maintained by IIT Madras. For the academic year 2026-2027, four IITs (IIT Indore, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Mandi) are offering seats through Sports Excellence Admission.

The scores for each candidate will be calculated as follows: $$\text{SEA Score}=\sum_{i}{W_i \times S_i}$$ where \(W_i\) is the weight of the \(i^{\text{th}}\) medal as shown in Appendix A or B and \(S_i\) is the points for the \(i^{\text{th}}\) medal according to Table 1.

SEA Score computation example: If a weightlifting sportsperson wins third place (bronze medal) in the Commonwealth Games and second place (silver medal) in the AIU Inter-University Weightlifting Championships, then, the candidate’s SEA Score for this set of achievements will be $$\text{Score}=0.8 \times 80 + 0.75 \times 50 = 101.50$$

It is noted that the difficulty level of playing at an international level depends on the kind of sport. To normalize the competitions across various sports and the number of participants in a given sport/game, the following methodology will be adopted as overarching criteria over and above those set out in Appendix–A and Appendix–B:

• A medal/participation is considered to be at the international level only if at least SIX nations participate in the respective tournament in the particular sport/game.
• Winning a medal at the national level will be considered only if the sport/game is played by at least 50% of the states in the competition.
• Online competitions will not be considered for SEA Score computation.

Candidates will not be considered for further rounds of admission through JoSAA portal if they accept a seat through SEA.

Para Sports corresponding to the sports listed in Appendix–A shall be treated on par with their respective sports and will be eligible across all categories of competitions, tournaments, and events specified in Appendix–B. Achievements in such Para Sports shall be assigned weightage equivalent to that of the corresponding sport in Appendix–A, subject to the condition that these achievements are obtained through officially recognized competitions and federations.

For the academic year 2026-2027, the SEA will consider the scores obtained by the candidates in the list of sports mentioned Appendix-A only to ensure the availability of facilities at the admitting IIT so that the candidates can continue to excel in sports.
